We Are All Downstream
This piece depicts a huge, twisting river…pure at the top (indigo blue) gradually falling into a polluted, convoluted mess (coffee stains). The fishing net is now empty, as is life in the water.
Gayle Crites is an artist in Golden, Colorado, working in a variety of media. She received her BA from Colorado State University, where she concentrated in printmaking, although some of her undergraduate art history studies were taken through the University of Mexico in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. She also produced a limited edition of prints at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During her formative years, Crites worked as a designer and illustrator, developing a significant following throughout the United States for her work in oil.She has been featured in magazines and books across the country, and has exhibited internationally in Japan, Mexico and the Philippines. http://www.gaylecrites.com

Tom, she’s got a piece right now at the Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe. It’s a show about the use of cochineal and I think the title of the exhibition is “Red.” I wish I could go…my friend Joan was just there and said it — and Gayle’s piece — are spectacular.
